Top Tracks 2014 Part XI 10 - 01
10. Nguzunguzu – Perfect
Lullaby Vol. 2 (ST)
I know this "track" is longer then most albums nowadays, and it is a mix, but undeniably one of the greatest moments of 2014. Nguzunguzu blend many styles of ethnic music together like reggeton, African dance and sprinkle it with the nostalgia of r´n´b. The pacing and quality of every section is majestic and never was I even close to not listening to this beast from top to bottom.
09. Gem Club – Idea For Strings (In Roses)
Gem Club are the biggest find of this year. Their subtle bedroom pop leaves you awe struck. Idea For Strings lives for the moments of harmony after a breaking Christopher Barnes delivered his lines. It is the cathedral of one’s mind, in all its deteriorated qualities.
08. Andy Stott – Science And Industry (Faith In Strangers)
Aptly named, Science And Industry shows Stott´s take on industrial music. Once again accompanied by the angelic voice of his piano teacher Alison Skidmore, the sense of dismay reflects throughout every facet of this track. Stott moves fast and delivers quick blows of static bass to the thumping rattle of his drums – yet again a perfect blend, muddling up a voluptuous grey.
07. Swet Shop Boys – Benny Lava (Swet Shop EP)
This is the catchiest tune of 2014. Heems and Riz Ahmed spit over some Hemsworth produced flip of a Hindi movie tune. The women in their high pitch resounding "benny lava" is so deeply imbued in me, it might come up as the last ironic aural impression of my death. And let us not forget Riz Ahmed delivering a great political verse. Hopefully the Swet Shop Boys won´t remain a one-time thing.

06. Ryan Hemsworth – Snow In Newark feat. Dawn Golden (Alone For The First Time)
No other artist might have the skill to strike twice in the top ten then multi-talented Ryan Hemsworth. He teaming with Dawn Golden aka Dexter Tortoriello from Houses makes perfect sense and Tortoriello´s collected delivery fits the clean production perfectly. Especially when adding the visuals to the song: Hemsworth goes on a trip to Nepal and takes his time in Buddhist temples and the vast nature of the Indian continent. A full blown experience and a gratifying track.
05. FKA twigs – Pendulum (LP1)
When you want to hear great prowess in songs about love and passion, FKA twigs is the artists to go to. Pendulum is a quite explosion of bottled up feelings, a slow moving stab at a desiring heart. "I dance feelings like their spoken" she sings and the beauty of her wordy movements give you a taste of life´s essence.

04. Cloud Nothings – I´m Not Part Of Me (Here And Nowhere Else)
This is the anthem for everyone who has a deficiency in being present as Dylan Baldi progresses from "I´m learning how / To be here and nowhere else" to "I´m not telling you / all I´m going through" backed by some sharp guitars and precise drumming, I can´t help but think about how hard it is to understand and be understood by others. Mostly this lack is also a dearth in being understood for who you are contrasted with the bulk of roles heaved upon you. For all those floating, the music by Cloud Nothings might be the best entity to talk to first.
03. Mono – The Last Dawn (The Last Dawn)
I find myself coming back for this compelling closer time and time again. As the last minute rings out, which is by far the most cathartic moment Mono have created as of yet, the song continuous in my mind. Mono are the gods of instrumental rock and their stripped down approach on this years The Last Dawn / Rays Of Darkness prompts an intrinsic journey to the greatest moments in one’s personal life. They tear you apart and put you together on this one, and thankfully the need for tears can be amended by the remembrance of having a replay button.
02. Jessie Ware – Champagne Kisses (Tough Love)
Jessie Ware just speaks to me. Seeing her live Champagne Kisses was one of the most explosive tracks and stuck to me upon first listen. While not the exact closer of her album, this songs sums up the essence of Tough Love and leaves not a need unattended.
01. Protomartyr – Maidenhead (Under Color Of Official Right)
Life is futile and yet you embark on it day after day – or Maidenhead by Protomartyr. The best way to comprehend the lyrics is to mishear them. From "Shade goes up / Shade goes down" the step to "Shit goes up / Shit goes down" for all its nonsensical qualities is small but telling. Maidenhead is waking up every morning to the fucking alarm clock and still thinking "bring it on, bitch". It is talking with those you don´t care about in anticipation of one face you don´t despise, it is enjoying time in all its short lived relativity and waking again. No better way to express this year. Thank You.
