20. Rolo Tomassi – Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It This is the definite album grappling with the dynamics of hard/soft this year. Rolo Tomassi have been growing and subtly shifting a sound that was close to prog-rock to another beast altogether. It is in the ambient moments, the uncertainty of the drifting glaciers bursting into flame that Time Will Die shines, as a vocal pair and a sonic outfit, Rolo Tomassi are able to live in both worlds an be completely centered when doing so. Songs like “Risen” or “Aftermath” live by Eva Spence and her ability to toe the line of electropop and performances by Björk or Imogen Heap. Here the band converts their huge amount of energy into delicate bursts of hope and reconciliation, well knowing they could plunge into chaos by moments notice. Lil Uzi Vert & Kanye West) "One year it's Illuminati / next year it´s the sunken place" stands as one of the most telling Kanye lines of this year and incorporates both his twitter persona and all political disarray regarding our former Yeezus. Released as a teaser track for Travis Scott´s Astroworld , "Watch" was the powerful riposte towards talk about the album not happening. With both Lil Uzi and Kanye appearing on one track, Scott made one of the best and most surprising collaborations happen before people thought about something like Kanye and Lil Pump being possible. 40. Remo Drive – Remo Drive  For your dose of indie energy and teenage angst, Remo Drive provide the good stuff. Their debuts album Greatest Hits does feel like a band that has been around for a long time, honing their skills and unleashing an album of their best work to date. Not many bands of this genre sound as fresh as Remo Drive. What captured my attention were their stunning instrumentals and disdain for standard song structures. Some songs will break down in the middle part with a purely instrumental stint only to pick up where they left. "Strawberita" for instance has this huge instrumental bridge that feels like an impromptu jam in disregard of how the track started. And this linear writing style pays off track after track, not letting their songs become simple pop or pop-punk and emanating an overflow of energy and creativity. 30. The Winter Passing – A Different Space Of Mind The dynamic of duo vocals, a female and a male voice, is a known in emo bands. The Winter Passing also have that trait running in favor of their place in this genre: The rougher male vocals, the also punky, but more tender female vocals. Nonetheless, the way the band is able to utilize this dynamic, not only trading verses or having a song lean on the one more than on the other, is drawing you in. Take “Flowerpot” for example: The tender vocals deliver the chorus, but do not work against the tortured male part, delivering maybe an uplifting moment, and work as two parts of the same. A Different Space Of Mind can be read as a fight with the troubles of adolescence, more often than not the lingering question of purpose in life.
