Top Tracks 2014 Part II 99 - 90
99. Nicki Minaj – Pills N
Potion (The Pink Print)
This is Nicki going 808´s And Heartbreaks in the best way possible. Her churning "I still love" paired with her sullen rapping works well with the simplistic beat. For all the unbearable pop escapades, Nicki knows how to redeem herself and remains capable as a rapper.
98. ♡kitty♡ – Marijuana (Impatiens)
I admit, without the great beat by Chrome Sparks there wouldn´t be much justification for a track by kitty to be on the list. Here way of non-rap talking just shouts trash in every way imaginable. Here we have a musician who knows that her output can´t be taken seriously; so why not try singing for once. The hushed and unconfident vocals work well with the pulsating beat and become catchy after some listens.
97. Dads – Only You (I´ll Be The Tornado)
"I haven´t been practicing what I preach" the first line of Only You fits the sparse guitar glimmer and drums of the first 90 seconds. This isn´t emo per se, but rather deadly honest music, the unraveling of a voice, packed into seven minutes, as grand as it is gut wrenching.
96. Rodrigo Y Gabriela – The Soundmaker (9 Dead Alive)
Interplay is a great thing, especially when two Latin inspired Spanish guitars dance around each other. The Soundmaker is thumping and exciting, with a beautiful mid-section and a whole lot variety to keep the thrill going.
95. Jesse Boykins III – Show Me Who You Are (Love Apparatus)
It is true: r´n´b is mostly the art of singing about sex. With time the emphasis on doing this in an artful way has succumbed to explicit songs leaving no room for imagination or to self-loathing headed by The Weeknd. Jesse Boykins amidst the negativity remains spiritual. The bass hits indicate a simplistic "I wanne fuck you" vibe, but soon turn to the pounding rhythm of a sensual encounter, reaching for understanding before translating to the body.
94. Julie Byrne – Attached to Us Like Butcher Wrap (Rooms With Walls And Windows)
Julie Byrne could be Omega Woman. Wandering alone as the world has already run out of its time. Abiding, singing her skeletal song to ashy fallout flowing into black rivers nurturing newfound nothingness.
93. 18+ – Crow (Trust)
Crow is raw and childish in the best way imaginable. The beeping synth line and the sample of a screeching crow as if a videogame from 1999 has a glitch. The singers / visual artists Justin and Samia trade their teasing lines and even though there should be some gloom in this song, for all the greyish blackness, it makes me smile.
92. Vaccine – Decryption (Decryption)
I´m glad I found Vaccine in the depths of the Internet. Desperately searching for Stott´isch artists delivering some dense electronic music, the balance between earnest suffocation and driving beats is only struck by a very few. Vaccine in her industrial meets digital tinged Decryption shows a grand feeling for pacing a track, adding little variations to a continuous idea and thus keeping the track from becoming too much of a heady listen.
91. Inc. & FKA twigs – FKAinc. (FKAinc.)
When this collaboration was announced, I felt my prayers being heard. Mellow duo inc. and the rising queen of experimental r´n´b FKAtwigs work like a charm. Inc. are drawn out to edgier instrumentation and twigs shows herself in a sensual whisper that cloaks the grief of the song in a layer of abandon unreached by neither alone. What else is there to say then "Don´t cry for the things you love, my fallen dove / because they die".
90. Helado Negro – Friendly Arguments (Double Youth)
Dreamy Synthpop in Spanish has an indescribable appeal. Sure Helado Negro also sing in English, but the Spanish songs have a patina to them. The ethereal quality of Friendly Arguments combined with the swaying lyrics make for one of the best discoveries this year.
