Abul Mogard – THe Sky Had Vanished Enter Sky-Music. Most of you will be familiar with the concept of space music – the kind of electronic sound somehow associated with the notion of future and space travel. Mind you, space still is silent and everything associated with space music might have its appeal, but just as this notion can be said to be an imagination, space music can only be "space-y" and a fiction build around the ideas of the distant and the future.  Synthesizers are woefully married with this imagery, and almost every time these electronically processed, not bodily resounding sounds are heard, the associations of future spring to mind and are utilized for description. One other association today, and one that Abul Mogard´s first release is narratively bound to, is that of nostalgia – or in other terms the past, inhabiting associations with synthesized sound. Sumac – The Deal Excuse the pun sounding association right away, but the best way to describe Sumac is through poisoning. When thinking post-metal, there is but one name that serves as a marker of quality: Aaron Turner. Like me, many miss Isis, but I can only admire the bands decision to turn a new leaf and let the project rest before becoming generic in its own way. Following the projects of the members involved, there is no doubt that there is still creativity left and every venture so far delivered. Still, Turner holds a somewhat special place, not only as a creative leader of the band, but also as the head of now – more or less – defunct Hydra Head Records. When Sumac was announced, high hopes began to form. And boy, does Turner show that he´s still as hart hitting as ever. So back to the poisoning aspect of The Deal : Poisoning understood as the intake of a foreign substance and the rapid, slow, conscious or unconscious collapse of the bodily functions or the whole card...

Muse – Drones I´ve been a fan of Muse since I first heard "Supermassive Black Hole". Saying that, I also know that this song, the album Black Holes and Revelations and especially the following The Resistance where the points of departure for many older fans of their music. In a way, they were attuning to pop sensibilities and were moving away from more experimental writing; even I had to notice that after getting their full discography and being disappointed by The Resistance . But in a way, Muse were always about pop sensibilities and entangling them with rock, alternative and symphonic elements.  The most major turn I would find in their music would be a deeper focus on hooks and being catchy, which sometimes can really lead to a dementia when it comes to presenting something original and growth.
